St. Patrick’s Society of Selangor
Estd. 1925
The St. Patrick’s Society of Selangor was founded in June, 1925. On its inception the primary role of the society was to arrange to celebrate the anniversary of St. Patrick, and today that continues to be the primary function of the society but it performs a much wider role on the community too. Our members are Irish people residing in Malaysia, descendants of Irish people in Malaysia and the many, many friends of Ireland who share an interest in Ireland’s culture and its people.
The main feature of the year for the Society is the St. Patrick’s Ball which is held each March. The ball has been held at The Shangri La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur for the past few years and it is regarded as one of the highlights of the year in the Malaysian social calendar. It is reputed to be the largest St. Patrick’s ball held outside of the Ireland and the USA, something that we are very proud of.
The St. Patrick’s Society of Selangor holds an annual charity auction and all funds raised are donated to worthy local causes. Over the past three years much need funds have been donated to The Alliance of Chin Refugees, The Independent Living and Training Centre and Hope Worldwide Malaysia to name but a few.
Throughout the year the Society also organises quizzes, pub nights, adults and children’s parties as well as working closely with the Irish embassy in Kuala Lumpur to promote all things Irish in Kuala Lumpur.
